Energy communities and sharing

Power that stays local.

Power from a school roof can be used by the town hall; surplus from a company's hall by its other site. Sharing and energy communities turn the plants of municipalities and businesses into more than single installations. We help set it up so that it pays for everyone involved.

What is what

  • Electricity sharing

A generator or active customer shares electricity with other supply points. The sharing group registers free of charge with the Electricity Data Centre (EDC); outside a single building it may have at most 11 delivery points.

  • Sharing within one building

In an apartment building, electricity can be shared through the common main fuse board without using the distribution grid.

  • Energy community

An association, cooperative or other legal person whose purpose is environmental, economic or social benefit for its members. Voting rights belong only to individuals, small businesses, churches, municipalities and regions. It registers with ERÚ.

  • Renewable energy community

Members may only be individuals, small and medium-sized enterprises, churches, municipalities and regions. Its territory may cover at most three municipalities with extended powers, or Prague.

  • Local distribution system

A site where one operator distributes electricity to other customers behind a single connection. Distribution to third parties requires an ERÚ licence and approved operating rules.

  • Flexibility aggregation

Customers, generators and storage operators can offer their flexibility through an aggregator, even without their electricity supplier's consent. The aggregator needs an electricity trading licence.

What we do for you

  • We map the supply points, their consumption and the possible sources, and calculate how much power can really be shared.
  • We propose the model: sharing within one owner, an energy community, or a local distribution system on a site.
  • With legal partners, we prepare the articles, contracts and the rules for sharing power and costs among members.
  • We handle the registrations and set-up with the distribution operator and the data centre.
  • We prepare and build the sources and batteries the community needs, and set up their operation.

What to watch

  • Interval metering is a must. Sharing works only between points with interval metering. The distributor must install it within three months of a request, at its own cost where the point has no generation or generation of up to 50 kW.
  • Simultaneity drives the economics. What is shared is electricity generated and used in the same quarter-hour. We therefore calculate the benefit from each point's data, not from annual totals.
  • Paid or free sharing. Paid sharing must be invoiced; free sharing needs only quantity data. Free sharing from a plant of up to 100 kW also needs no ERÚ licence, provided no other plant is connected at the same supply point and the output receives no operating support.
  • The rules are still evolving. EDC launched services for storage and flexibility aggregation on 01/08/2026, and 46,828 participants were sharing electricity at 30/06/2026. Some limits for communities are still being adjusted, so we always check the current wording before setting anything up.
  • Grants. The Modernisation Fund call KOMUNERG 1/2025 for developing energy communities has CZK 100 m and takes applications until 31/12/2026.

FAQ

Sharing: your questions.

How much can sharing save?

That depends on how much electricity is generated and used in the same quarter-hour and what price of electricity it replaces. We work it out from your supply points' data before you invest in generation.

Do we have to set up a community?

Not always. Sharing among up to 11 points works without one. A community makes sense when you want more members, or residents and businesses in the municipality, to take part.

How are savings and costs split?

By rules we set in the contracts or articles: who gets how much electricity, at what price, and who pays for generation and operation. The rules have to be clear to every member.

Is there a grant?

The KOMUNERG 1/2025 call supports developing energy communities, and other Modernisation Fund calls fund generation for municipalities. We find the right call and prepare the application.
